What's the Best Golf GPS System?

!±8± What's the Best Golf GPS System?

If you're wondering what's the best golf GPS system, then welcome to the club (no pun intended). That's like asking what's the best golf course, or the best hamburger or beer. Although some are decidedly better than others, as far as choosing the best, you really have to know why you're buying a golf GPS in the first place. So, in this article, we're going to talk about what's the best golf GPS system, but we're not going to come out with one single GPS that's best. More like we're going to help you discover what golf GPS's can do and why you want one in the first place. Hope that sounds fair! If so, let's get to it.

One of the first things you need to do when you're deciding what's the best golf GPS system is figure out how much you're willing to pay. Golf global positioning system devices cost anywhere from a little more than 0 to 0. Obviously, you get more features and quality the more you're willing to pay. But exactly what are those features and how is your choice affected by them?

Let's leave out the pieces of junk. In this article, I'm only talking about quality merchandise, you know those built by Sonocaddie, SkyCaddie, Callaway, Garmin, Golf Buddy and a few more.

At the low end of the price spectrum your golf GPS device is more like a range finder than a real GPS, you know like the one you use in your car with maps and all that stuff. The lower end devices can tell you distances to the green. The better ones can tell you distances to the front, center, and back of the green, and can keep up with shot length. Three of my favorites at the lower end of the price continuum are the Sonocaddie V100 and the iGolf Neo. These are pretty comparable units, and right now they cost about 0 give or take.

Of course, this might not be your definition of what's the best Golf GPS System at all. If you need a little more functionality, you might want to consider the SkyCaddie SG2.5. Still no maps, but more sophisticated statistics functions and a little bigger screen. This will set you back about 0.

If you're spending that much money, however, and you have another 0 to spend, you really should consider going all the way and getting a "real" golf GPS. I'm not saying the others I've mentioned are not real. They are very good units, which you can use to figure out distances and track shot length. What I am saying is that golf GPS systems like the Garmin Approach, the Callaway uPro, the SkyCaddie SG5, and the Golf Guru have really sophisticated maps of the course you're playing. Some, like the SkyCaddie only show you the green. Other's like the Callaway uPro actually give you a bird's eye view of the whole fairway, then let you focus in on the green as you get closer.

If you were going to give a definitive answer to the question what's the best golf GPS system, then it would have to be one of these-Garmin Approach, Callaway uPro, or Golf Guru, or Golf Buddy. That is, if money doesn't matter, because these babies are going to set you back 0 to 0. Which is a lot of money...unless you're a real golfer like me, then money is never the issue!

So, the question of what's the best golf GPS system doesn't really have one answer. It's got several.

Sonocaddie V100 Review

!±8± Sonocaddie V100 Review

Take a look at the Sonocaddie V100

If you're looking for a GPS that's not going to break the bank, but which will give you the information you need. The Sonocaddie V100 might look like a budget golf GPS, but it's really not. Alright, alright! It doesn't have the fancy graphics of a Callaway uPro or a Garmin Approach. But it still probably has all the technology you need, if you don't need to actually "see" the course ahead of you as you play.

Shows Everything You Need

After all, it's the graphics that separates the 0 to 0 models from the 0 to 0 models... and the Sonocaddie V100 can do everything...except the fancy graphics. It can show you:

1. The distance to the green.
2. Distances to various way points that you input, yourself.
3. The distance of your last shot, and also has personalized target setting.

Somewhat Large

On the minus size, the Sonocaddie V100, is somewhat of what I like to call a clunker. By that I mean, it's a little bigger and heavier than some of the newer, sleeker golf GPS devices. Now, it's not big and it's not heavy, just a little less sleek than some of the other more expensive models.

There's something to be said for being bigger, though! Bigger means more real estate for the screen, and after all, that's what you want, isn't it? As far as portability, I clip my golf GPS to my golf bag, but still I think that even if you carry the Sonocaddie V100 in your pocket, you're not going to be hampered by its presence.

Easy to Use

There are two more things that the Sonocaddie V100 GPS Unit has going for it. It's really, really easy to use. You don't have to "learn" how to use it. The user interface is awesome! You just turn it on and basically start playing. I like that, since I hate reading instruction manuals!

No Annual Fees

Also, instead of paying an annual fee, you only have to pay a once-in-a-lifetime fee of about , then you can download whatever course you want. Since I'm sort of a penny pincher, I like that also.

All in all, if you're looking for an entry level GPS, the Sonocaddie V100 GPS Unit should easily make its way onto your short list. It's not as sophisticated as some of it's newer brothers and sisters, but it's so doggone easy to use! Having said that, in this price range, I would probably go for the equally functional, but oh so much smaller iGolf Neo. You decide! You wont' go wrong with theSonocaddie V100 GPS Unit, however.

IGolf Neo Review

!±8± IGolf Neo Review

There has been a lot of talk, questions and debate on a number of forums and in magazines about the iGolf Neo but I have yet to find a comprehensive review.

In this article I intend to give you a short review on this particular model and I have assumed that you are familiar with the basic functions and uses of a golf GPS.

The iGolf Neo has all the basics functions that you will need to play and improve your golf with, it is not loaded with irrelevant "bells and whistles". The folks at iGolf have concentrated on bringing us a no nonsense, extremely useful and more than functional model that has all the versatility that you will need at a very low price.

It has the following features:

-Comes with 5 courses of your choice and has an option to download further courses for an annual subscription of just under .00. The annual subscription needs some explanation. Unlike any other subscription this one allows for up to 100 golf courses per annum to be downloaded - for each year that you pay. In my experience there are very few weekend golfers that play more than 100 different courses in a lifetime let alone 1 year so this is an extremely generous download limit for the annual fee of just under .00.

The most attractive part of the annual subscription is that it is not compulsory and once downloaded you get to keep the courses on your own PC and not on some remote server. They "belong" to you and you can then stop your annual subscription and still retain full use of your iGolf Neo and the courses you have downloaded on to your computer.

- You can store up to 10 courses in the unit itself. This is probably adequate for most golfers

- Can be used anywhere in the world and with the 20 satellite channels is very accurate to within a couple of yards

- It is the cheapest unit on the market as well as the smallest. The size makes for one handed operation. It also allows fits comfortably in your pocket without losing any signals from the satellites.

- The Neo has an 80 x 120 pixel high contrast LCD screen which is very easy to read.

- The 14 hours of battery life that you get from the rechargeable Lithium Ion battery is the longest of any Golf GPS models that I have come across. Recharging the battery takes half an hour or so and can be done either from a wall socket or through a UBS port on your computer.

- It has a shot distance feature which allows you to learn exactly how far you hit each club in your bag. The more you play the more familiar and confident you become with your own game. You cannot help but improve.

- You can map up to 4 individual reference points per hole to suit your requirements.

- Quite simply you could purchase a more expensive model that does exactly the same or purchase the Neo and have a couple of hundred dollars change in your pocket.

This review would be incomplete without telling you the negatives:

- Firstly it is unfortunately not compatible with MAC computers. It operates off Windows 2000, XP and Vista.

- The belt clip is very flimsy and really not worth having. However the iGolf Neo fits comfortably in your pocket.

- The accompanying Start Up and User manuals leave a bit to be desired but the unit is so easy to operate that these are hardly required.

Having reviews a total of 17 different top selling models I can honestly say that this little baby is top of the class in terms of value for money, unless you particularly want a model that has a color screen and other bells and whistles.

I suppose the best review would come from current owners all of whom say they are more than happy with their purchase.

What can possibly be better than positive endorsements from happy users?

I hope you have found this iGolf Neo Review useful and that it will help you in deciding what GPS to purchase.
